A Coffee Break

(For Bruce & Marlon)

By Tony Robles

We sat together drinking

Cups of coffee for

Days, months, years

And others at nearby

Tables did likewise

And the trees that lined

The streets assumed their

Normal positions

And our problems swirled

From our cups and lifted

Somehow on a carefree

Wind and those trees swayed

In a gesture that said what

We couldn’t

We talked about

Women we never knew

Children we never knew

Who grew up

In a blink

Jobs we never got

Lottery jackpots

We didn’t hit

And potentials

We never reached

That coffee went

Down good like

Melted butter then

Disappeared

How do you

Measure cups

Of coffee

By cups

Teaspoons

Pots

Or

Lifetimes?
